Luxor Lexicon

The Luxor Lexicon is not a conventional 'Guide to Luxor' listing hotels and restaurants or a treatise on Egyptian history; it is simply an A-Z insight to the things I learned during fifteen years of living and working in Egypt which is a fascinating country. It is a personal view of Luxor but gives the information that I wish I had been able to read when I first came to live in Egypt with its big smiles, constant sunshine and bewildering culture. It is in dictionary format so just look up the name of the Pharaoh, God, Goddess, Temple or Tomb that you are interested in and read all about it. Luxor is ancient Thebes and its history goes back thousands of years. For centuries it has interested Archaeologists and Egyptologists of many nationalities and thousands of tourists visit every year. One day it will be the biggest open-air museum in the world. We hope that this book will help you enjoy it. (2013)

I bought this for my daughter who was doing a month's elective as a Doctor in Luxor and she found it really useful.
When I joined her for a week I was able to use it as well and learnt so many things that I didn't know about Luxor after 4 visits there. The way it is arranged alphabetically makes it really easy to check out about places, words, restaurants etc.
I can't recommend this book highly enough for people who want to know more than just the usual tourist information about this amazing town.

If I had one factual book to take with me to Luxor this would be it. Each entry is concise (the longest being half a page) but really informative and most importantly very easy to remember. Use the 'search inside' facility to get a taster and you'll be hooked! It will improve your holiday or time in Luxor 100% (meya meya!) whether you are going for the first time or think you already know everything. For roughly the same price as a coffee and snack on the plane, what more can I say?!

I found this book a very well written comprehensive guide to Luxor. A really impressive compilation of practical information from how much to tip the hotel porter, to where to find a dentist, along with lots of interesting details about historic and modern points of interest.
